Thanksgiving Tragedy (Current Event)
On November 18, 2012, Jasmine Benjamin, a 17 year old freshmen nursing student at Valdosta State University in Atlanta, Georgia, was found dead in her dormitory study area. According to CBS Atlanta, passers-by thought she was simply sleeping so they didn't bother her, not knowing she was dead. In addition to that, her parents were not informed. Jasmine had been dead about 12 hours before her parents were notified. Disturbingly, before police had finally notified her, she had already found out, through Facebook! No parent should find out about the death of their child on a social networking site. Her mom was forwarded a status from one of her daughter's friends about her daughters' death. Moments later a police visit to their home confirmed the news. School officials say that they notified Gwinnett County Sheriff's Department, they notified the police department, and they notified her parents. They were deeply hurt and disgusted by the fact that after a couple of hours passed no one cared to check on her. On top of that, he stepdad state
"For someone to be so insensitive not to reach out to the family, or not even to keep up with what’s going on because it’s a holiday and you’re going away on vacation or whatever you’re doing — it’s very, very hurtful to say the least." I think it was very selfish of the school to stop keeping up with what's going on because it time for break and they are trying to get to their families. The death of Jasmine Benjamin was the Thanksgiving tragedy.

That is very tragic. I feel so bad for her family. To find out like that is terrible.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with Racheal. That is probably one of the worst ways to found out of her death.
